Was that a really bad thing to do?

I knew it was, but I didn’t want to believe it. Last week I’d been horrified to recognize Naomi sitting in my homeroom. I’d promised to stay away from her, to follow my perfect plan to live a life free of what Dad had done.

That plan had just been shot to shit, and right at that moment I couldn’t have been happier.

Calm down, hoss. She only kissed you.

Naomi had already gone inside, but I took a minute to watch the rain peter out to occasional fat spatters, each one lighting up like a spark as it fell past the windows. It’d gotten true dark, way past curfew by now. I shoved off the dorm wall to head back inside, but a clattering sound stopped me. It came from outside the quad.

I followed it back around the side of the Academy building. I didn’t go far, the single security light up ahead cutting deep shadows that made the path hard to see. The wall of the main building was set back a ways behind a tool shed, nothing but a black line to my eyes.

I went over to the shed. The thin light hit the brass padlock on the door. I tested it. It was locked, so the sound probably hadn’t come from inside.

All I could hear was the dull thud of raindrops hitting the shed roof and scattering over the gravel path behind me. One fat droplet hit the back of my neck, crawling past the collar of my shirt and down my spine.

The sound came again—closer, now, but quieter. More a shuffle of grit than the clanging I’d heard before.

“Hello?”

No answer, just another shuffle, but I tracked it to the dark mouth of the recess into the main building.

“Is anyone—”

A fist came out of the shadows and glanced off my shoulder, not hard enough to hurt, but forcing me back a step. I didn’t get a chance to see who it was before he lunged at me, his full weight almost taking me down. The stink of piss and liquor coming off him was so strong I retched.

“Sonofabitch!” I shoved him, catching just a glimpse of his face as he tripped back into the shadows with a grunt. “Jackson?”

The asshole scrabbled to right himself against the wall of the building. “Can’t find me . . . gonna kill me . . . ” His words came out like chewed marbles, and I could barely make sense of what he said.

“Quit it, man. I don’t care if the principal catches you—it’ll serve you right.”

Jackson clawed at me again, trying to grab on to my sleeve. But his hand caught on air, as though he was seeing two of me.

“Hey! I don’t wanna whup your sorry ass when you’re drunk, but I will,” I said.

He didn’t answer.

“All right. Sleep it off, asshole.”

I left him to stew in his own piss while I headed back to the quad. Seconds later, I was back in my room, the door slamming hard enough to splinter.
